14% of parents say they use a credit card to spread out the cost of days out and other excursions in the summer holidays, according to new research by American Express.
Meanwhile, around three quarters (71%) of families plan to use reward and loyalty points, as well as discount deals, to keep their children entertained during the summer, while more than half (52%) say they will use points from loyalty schemes and credit card rewards to cover the cost of days out.
Head of Partnerships at American Express, Elisabeth Leblanc, said: “With up to two months of holidays ahead, many parents are understandably feeling the pressure of costs attached to the school holidays.
“By budgeting throughout the year and clever use of reward and loyalty schemes, cost-conscious parents can ensure they have lots of fun activities and days out planned to keep their families occupied over the summer.”
An expert at the IVA Forum said: “Using credit cards can be a very effective way of spreading out costs, but borrowers should make sure they can afford to repay the debt in good time.”
