Households look to take in lodgers to help pay debts

Posted in IVA News on 21st February 2010.

Figures from house-share website Spareroom.co.uk have revealed that the number of households looking to take in a lodger to help clear their debts increased by 27% during the first 14 days of 2010, the Telegraph reports.

A survey found that 65% of respondents were ‘overstretched financially’ and that the cost of Christmas 2009 had forced them to take action to clear their debt.

An IVA expert for the IVA Forum commented: “It is encouraging to see people taking action to tackle their debt. Although taking in a lodger may not clear someone’s debt outright, it should help to raise some extra money that could be used to supplement their monthly repayments.

“We would advise anyone struggling with their debt to seek professional advice without delay. The sooner they act, the more options they should have available to become debt free.”
